Astronomy Citizen Science Projects
Using your time and skills to add to the science record is also a useful way of exploring space when it is not suitable for observing.
Citizen science projects usually take the form of pattern recognition or transcription. You are presented with an image or some data from a space mission, and you confirm how it looks, or mark characteristics, or translate some data. These projects rely on a vast group of people from around the world participating. The data processing done in this way can often be more accurate and cheaper than computational technology. And it gives us all a chance to participate in science.
Your observations will be reproduced several times to verify the accuracy.
There are currently 1100 citizen science projects active in all disciplines of science. Here is a selection of astronomy projects.
